Peer Advocacy for Impaired Nurses...
Who: Jack Stem became a Registered Nurse in 1978, graduating from the Christ Hospital School of Nursing in Cincinnati, Ohio. He took position as a staff nurse in their emergency room. It was at that time he discovered the advanced practice nurse specialty of the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). He graduated in 1981 from the Aultman Hospital School of Nurse Anesthesia. After moving back home to Cincinnati, Ohio, Jack finally found a position in Dayton, Ohio. Unfortunately, his chronic pain from spondylolisthesis was growing more frequent and more intense. By that time, he had become dependent on his pain medication.
What: Peer Advocacy for Impaired Nurses, LLC is intended to be a central source of information about substance abuse and addiction in the nursing profession. After his early struggles of trying to remain drug free, Jack finally found his destiny when he contacted the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) to volunteer to assist the peer assistance committee in any way he could. Fully expecting to be “blown off”, he was overwhelmed when Diana Quinlan, the chair of the AANA Peer Assistance Advisor’s Committee, responded to his email with an email that was several pages long when printed. She invited Jack to visit the committee at the national meeting held in Washington DC that year (2005). She ended her email with the words that meant more to Jack than almost anything he’d heard since he began his journey almost 15 years previously. There were only 2 words, but they changed his life: “Welcome Home!”
When: October of 2008, Peer Advocacy for Impaired Nurses, LLC was born.
Why: Because there are very few advocates available for nurses. Why? Because there is a lack of information about this disease and too many nurses base their opinions on Myth, Misbelief, and Misinformation!
